Housing on the Sunshine Coast is tight. Rents are high, adult kids are staying home longer and many parents want to live closer to family. A tiny home or granny flat in your own backyard solves several of these problems at once.
1. Keep family close, with privacy for everyone
A separate home gives ageing parents, adult children or a returning family member their own front door, kitchen and bathroom. You stay close enough to help, without sharing every room.
2. Earn rental income
Queensland now allows a granny flat to be rented to anyone, not just family. A well-designed two-bedroom home can help with the mortgage or fund your retirement. Short-term holiday letting is a separate question and is not allowed in some areas, so check with your council first.
3. Add value to your property
A quality, approved second home makes a property more flexible for the next buyer, whether they want space for family, a home office or a rental.
4. A smaller home is easier to live in
Tiny homes and granny flats suit people who want less maintenance, lower power bills and a simpler life, without giving up good design.
5. Modular is faster than a traditional build
A LumeHaus home is built off-site while your site is prepared. Construction is ready for delivery in around eight weeks from contract signing, once approvals and the final design are in place.
6. Built for the coast
Our homes are designed for Queensland living: open-plan layouts, big glass doors to the deck, and finishes chosen to handle coastal conditions. See our range of designs for the full collection.
7. One team, one fixed price
You deal directly with David and Craig from the first chat to handover, on a fixed-price contract with variations only in writing.
Tiny home or granny flat: what's the difference?
People use the words loosely. A tiny home is often on wheels and very small. A granny flat (a "secondary dwelling" in Queensland planning terms) is a permanent second home on the same block as your house, built to the National Construction Code. LumeHaus builds permanent modular homes, so you get the feel of a tiny home with the approvals and build quality of a proper house. For a realistic budget, see our granny flat cost guide. The Queensland Building and Construction Commission explains how tiny homes are treated, including approvals and licensed installation, in its tiny homes FAQs.
